CALL OF THE SEA (PANTOUM)

The waves are dancing with joy,
Urging fisher folk to come along.
Hidden treasures are there to enjoy,
Mother Nature’s lap is where they belong.

Urging fisher folk to come along,
To cast their nets into the depths,
Mother Nature’s lap is where they belong,
As they wait for a catch with bated breaths.

Casting their nets into the depths,
Swiftly rowing their boats along.
As they wait for a catch with bated breaths,
Their voices gently break into song.

Swiftly rowing their boats along
Hidden treasures are there to enjoy,
Their voices gently break into song,
The waves are dancing with joy.
TURBULENCE

Waves lashing at the shore
In a never ending race
Overlapping, overtaking
Heading for victory over the other
Thunder clouds roaring
Menacingly to rupture out
And lash at the earth
With all fury and ferocity;
Forest fire raging
Destroying flora and fauna
With all strength and vehemence;
The river in spate
Devastating all and sundry in its path
The turbulent mind operating
Brewing storm in a teacup,
Conniving new strategies and tactics
The tumult and turmoil
Will it come to rest?
SUNSHINE

The peal of church bells
With rhythm and song
While waves lash at shore,
The flowering of a bud
And the chirping of birds
The cow mooing in yonder farm,
The morning dew
Bidding adieu the mist
Heralding yet another day,
A mother's love
Akin to a doe with its fawn,
The cherubic toddler enjoying
The mirth of children at play,
Tinkling laughter of maidens gawking
At officers marching by,
Family at the dinner table
In tittle-tattle and Tête-à-tête
Reverberating with joy, radiance and dazzle
That's what Sunshine is all about.
MOTHER'S FOOTSTEPS

Time meant to express my gratitude,
You have braved all storms with fortitude!
From you, I have learnt forbearance,
Imbibed the spirit of tolerance.
Good qualities in me you helped cultivate,
With a carrot and stick, never allowed to vegetate.

"Life is a roller coaster ride,
One has got to take things in their stride."
How do I repay you, if I may ask?
For caring and providing, never taking to task.
Adorable daughter, dutiful wife, loving mother you have been,
Whether I can emulate you, it remains to be seen.
GOAL AHEAD (Kyrielle Sonnet)

Ambling along the sunlit road,
Decisions made begin to goad.
As the seasons change, change your mind,
Life's treasures are for you to find.

Angst better be left on the way,
Take in the freshness of the day.
With open mind, let nothing bind,
Life's treasures are for you to find.

The goal is just around the bend,
Crossing barriers as you wend,
Divine bliss, when you meet your kind,
Life's treasures are for you to find.

Ambling along the sunlit road,
Life’s treasures are for you to find.
DEAR MOTHER

Child could not tarry,
has departed in a hurry.
The void, no one can every fulfil,
the mystery of death-cannot unravel, refill.
Calling out to the mother in you,
And saying, We love you too!

THE SONG OF LIFE

Music
Is what I enjoy most
At all times hot or cold
When I am depressed
It gets me back into a mood
And proceed with mundanes.

Song
In rhyme or verse
Attracts me best
Helps me forget
Stress at work
Or the pressures of home.

Harmony
Which strengthens relationships
To share and care for all
The song of Life
The spirit of freedom
I crave to have.
TRAFFIC JAM

Whew! Caught again!
Indeed, it is a pain!
The angry snarling rows
Of never ending traffic.
Disorderly, lacking discipline,
Criss-Cross on the roads
Blocking all the exits,
Angry drivers honking
Like the pack on the street barking,
Pell-mell out there,
No one can go ahead from here.
What’s this? Said the tourist to the cabbie
Oh Sir, this is the peak hour traffic!
A policeman comes from somewhere
Inhaling the fumes and dust from the vehicles
A wave of hand to the left, and then to the right,
Yippee! His hands have worked magic.
Vehicles have started moving on…..
Soon it’ll be time for us to proceed
Patience, my dear Sir, it’s a traffic jam you’re in.
Thank your stars if you succeed to get out
Be in time to get your flight,
Lucky if don't get caught in the traffic jam again!
A BIRTHDAY

It’s going to be my birthday before long,
So what? It’s just another day to get along.
Said my counterpart nonchalantly
But it’s special! said I proudly
Nothing much but another day in the week.
But it’s the day we seek,
After waiting throughout the year,
Eagerly awaiting as it draws near.
A Birthday’s not another day as every day is.

It is the
Best day in one’s Life
In spite of the odds, to
Rejoice, recall and evoke
The Blessings of the Lord and others
However we may be with them at other times
Delve, discuss and debate as to what to buy,
About the place of the party, get together et al,
You now know, it’s a wonderful day.

A day which calls for celebration
A day which helps forget worries, Undoubtedly
A day where one grows older
A day which makes you wiser
A day when you can share and love
A day when you forgive your enemies
A day to look your best
A day to pass any test
A BIRTHDAY- it’s exclusively yours.
TWILIGHT

At crossroads during the sunset of Life
As days bygone are brought to reminiscences
Without cares or worries, with anxieties and tensions
The ebbs and flows in the familial Ocean
To gratify desires of all and sundry,
With resultant brickbats or bouquets
The fallacy of this world has been understood.
Uncomplicated matters have become complex
The ogre of malevolence, envy, prejudice
Would never ever unravel simple truths
All that is left at this instant
Is to introspect and discern
The spirit and Origin of Man
Riches or scarcity, fame or name
Aren't matters of bother any longer.
While awaiting everlasting peace, undeterred,
Relentlessly, day after day
SIXTIETH BIRTHDAY

Sixty years young,
It's your day today!
Xcitement for your family
Thrilling time with your friends
You deserve it-you're wonderfu
Progression

Walking along the bitumen roads,
Engulfed by gargantuan structures
Gleaming in the sunshine offering a cold stare.
Reminiscent of the locale that man hath dare,
To create his environment, caring for none.
Destroying foliage, flora and fauna,
As if they mean little to him any more.
On the highway, angry horns blare
Whilst passers by make way for the guys in scurry
Who's forgotten all and sundry are in hurry.
In this world of Internet and cyber cafes
With machines superior to live faces
Human kind has become egoistic some more...Alas!
The expansion bubble is about to contract,
Things in society are not intact.
Felony, horror, malevolence on the rise,
One has to STOP! To ponder twice...
Who hath brought this self-destruction!
In the voyage of progression.
RESPITE

It's the finish of day
Of mundane happenings,
Connections and transactions
Running hither and thither
Breaking, making, forming
New relations and associations
Accomplishing and achieving
Targets set in the rat race.

Now is the time to unwind
To delve deep and find
The other side of me
Which I have failed to see
The dual personality in Man
The perception between the
Real and the unreal, sets the tone
For a new morrow.
FRIENDSHIP

Frank, free and filled with joy
Round the year, remaining intact
Increasing over the years
Expressing feelings of love
Never a bitter word
During stress or difficult times
Sorting out problems with each other
Holding out to one another
Individuals with inquisitive minds,
Partners in action and deed.
That’s FRIENDSHIP!

Pushing aside personal woes
Imbibing each others’ good
Hanging on until required
Showering goodness upon the other
Demanding-no, never!
Notwithstanding the shortcomings
Evolving, emerging as better beings
Improving, improvising, never substituting
Reaping dividends from the bond
True enough, that's FRIENDSHIP.

COLOURS OF MY FRIEND

Black and Whites
are shades when she is
crystal clear and right!

Sometimes red
at the injustice and prejudices
she encounters,
never yellow, cause she is never
jaundiced in her views,
never green, she envies no soul!
Sometimes blue, sometimes pink,
But no matter the colour
I love the way she is.
CRESCENT MOON

Smiling down from sky
flanked by Mars and Jupiter,
connoisseur's delight.
REUNION

Siblings meeting!
Merry making and eating,
exchanging news and updating,
without forgetting,
Waiting for another.
Got to be patient,
for it is not anywhere nearest,
recalling with nostalgia
All the memorabilia,
Wonderful reunion
Holy as a Communion!
MEETING SIBLINGS

Brothers of mine-one two and three,
Them I will meet, when I am free.
Of old times again, we would talk.
Until their wives step in to balk .

Carefree time we have had as kids,
Parents fulfilling all our bids.
Good times they were, no scorn or mock.
Under the mango grove we’ll walk.

Wonderful meeting we have had.
Exchanging news that’s good and bad.
Shadows are beginning to stalk!
Nice reunion! I can rock!
PLUMERIA FRANGIPANI

(INDIAN CHAMPA)

Flowery carpet on the ground,
abundantly strewn
all over the place.
Corrugated evergreen leaves,
Nectarless.
Fragrant at nights,
duping the moths
who help pollinate,
transfer pollen
from flower to flower.
Five petalled Tropical delight,
A sight to behold.
Cream and yellow,
Pink and white-
Splash of colours.
Tagore’s inspiration,
Nag Champa fragrance-
Bob Dylan’s favourite.
National flower of Laos,
Veritable treasure of Nature.
MAGIC WORDS

Thank you!
Evokes magic,
Can express a lot with this word,
Yet it does not come easily.
Grateful!

Sorry!
goes a long way,
Helps to make amends,
Apologize, regain friendship.
Excuse!

Please!
polite request,
Pleasant sound to the ears,
Speaks volumes about character.
Enchant!
CONFLICT

(ACROSTIC)

Clash of ego,
Opposing others' thoughts,
Never in harmony,
Free thought hampered,
Leadedness,
Incompatible,
Contradictory ideas,
Turbulent mind.

ONOMETOPAEMIA

FLOP SHOW

Mrs.Floppy had to host a party,
Wanted to be ready and steady.
She cleaned the pots and pans-scrub, scrub, scrub!
Washed all the linens-wash, wash, wash!
Wiped the floor till it shone, and shone brighter.
On the day of the party-hustle and bustle.
Chopped all the vegetables chop, chop, chop!
The mixer went on and on whirr! whirr! whirr!
Pizzas in the oven went sizzle, sizzle, sizzle!
Pressure cooker on the stove whistling away.
In came her naughty one with the garden hose
Water, water everywhere-splash, splash, splash!
Floppy slipped and fell,
Plates and the cups went crash, bang, crash!
Angry, her baby, she gave a slap, another slap!
Sob, sob, sob! Naughty went to bed.
Guests arriving-Ding dong! Ding Dong!
QUIET PLEASE

It’s exam time
Children are busy at work
Their heads bent
Eyes on the paper,
Not looking here or there
A pin drop you would hear.

Their heads are full of thoughts
Their pages are filled with response
To the questions the teacher has posed
Their writing neat and drawings too
Would fill your heart with joy
Children at work…..Quiet Please!
CAMARADERIE

Distances separate,
Time zones differ.
Physical proximity absent,
Yet, the thoughts
Of the good old times
The sharing, the caring,
The sad and the happy moments
will be remembered!
For, true friendship has no expectations,
surpasses all barriers.

DEMISE

Old man walking on the street,
tripped, stumbled, hurt his face and teeth,
Staggering home, he fell on the bed,
Doctor arriving, declared him dead.

His only daughter, torn with grief,
For she had been with him just a brief,
Confused, dazed at the sudden end,
Father-"Alone, why did I send?"

Now, everything has gone awry,
The whole world has become bleary,
Father, I miss you terribly!
Despite people around, I feel lonely.
REVERIE-OLD TIMES

You visited me again last night.
Father, you were there in flesh and blood.
I pinched myself-Yes, it was true.
I remember every word that you said.
You were happy at the progress I had made
The way I had planned all my activities,
Every word of advice that you had passed,
I had practised.

It was like old times again,
Moments which I could not afford to lose.
You sat there sipping the tea
As I updated you of the happenings,
The joys and the sorrows
Of the right and wrong decisions made.
Every phrase was taken in
No frown, only a gentle smile.

Daylight had gone, night crept in.
We had talked for hours, I realized.
I complained about how you had punished me
Once, I had gone out without your permission.
You made me wait outside the house till late in the night,
Until mother took pity on me and let me in.
Strict you were then,
Now I understand it was for my good.

Happy moments last only for a while,
The truth dawned on me as we were conversing.
Not wanting to let go
I asked if you could spend the night with me.
You had other plans,
My offer was declined.
Reluctantly I had to say Good Bye.
The morning alarm screamed-Reality!

EXAMINATION

Exam Time
No time for play,
Or even to rest.
No time to watch television,
Favourite programmes are all gone.
No time to catch up with friends,
To send some SMS es.
No time to read a novel,
Or laze around with newspaper,
Google and Yahoo, a big Boo!
Orkut and Face book go kaput.
Now, intensive study time,
Grades are the deciding factor!
Other pleasures can wait,
A time for it all will come.
Study table strewn with books,
Time for revising over and over
Till the head spins round and round
Even in sleep, figures and facts haunt,
Exam Time.

TANKA

ITS NEW YEAR

New Year arriving
time to make resolutions
heart is filled with joy
bitter memories gone off
walking ahead elated

FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES

Look to the left, look to the right
They did not pay heed
The rules of the road they did not follow.
A terrible noise…..
Crash! The two motorbikes grazed
against each other
Drivers down!
injured legs and hands
Thank your stars!
It did not happen on the main road,
there was no other vehicle passing by….
Look too the left, look to the right
Heed Traffic Rules.
Better to be Mr Late
Than Late Mr.…..

TANKA

OLD WOMAN

Wearily she walks
sunburnt skin shrivelled and dried
stooped and bent with age
trudging along she ponders
if the night would see the day

MOTHER'S DAY

It's going to be Mother's Day soon
A wonderful day! A boon!
As I think of a present for you
I know that nothing would compensate
All that you have endured for your brood
Adjusting with people in the neighborhood.
Your strictness and discipline
Was used for us to grow into level-headed adults
The values and lessons learnt have
helped us rise whenever we had a fall,
And be sensitive and considerate to all.

While Dad was around
You were a pillar of strength to him
Helping him take the right decisions
Towing in line with him
Following him like a shadow.
Without him around now
With equanimity and poise,
You have managed to
Collect the threads of your life.
Your blessings for the children who live yonder
Makes the heart grow fonder.

(As every mother is, mine is special too. She is not educated in the true sense, yet she has a heart of gold. She is warm, considerate, loving and caring -in short an unsung heroine.)

CLERIHEW

UNCLE VAN

Uncle Van, the man next door is a droll.
Day after day, he goes for a stroll,
with a baton and umbrella in hand,
Resembles a bandleader with his band.

UNSUNG HEROES

Hardworking hands, toiling night and day,
create the architectural amazement.
deftly, diligently dexterously,
defying all odds,
devoid of any comfort,
paying attention to detail
despite domestic discomfort,
desperate to succed in designing,
deriving satisfaction, then detaching
themselves decisively.

Delighted dignitaries watch with disbelief,
congratulate the architect
and the sponsor.
Building is dedicated to the ‘Great Man.’
What about the unsung heroes
who slumped, slouched, slogged, strived
to create the skyscraper
toiling night and day,
baring the sun or the cold.
They remain unsung heroes.

GRANDPA

Each morn he'd be up at crack of dawn
To welcome a new calendar day in the evening of Life,
Routines complete, to sit up with
devout books
Which he'd devour, delve and doodle
As if this existence weren't enough
for them all.
An enigma around him was perpetually present
This never could be fathomed
Attempt as hard as did I
To discern this individual of words a few
Succeed I did - long after he was a gone.
Desolate and lonesome appeared the room
Sans Grandpa in its center
The Elusive Mystery I managed to unravel...
You too can gain that Peace in Life
If you recognize the source of Misery.

FRIEDN (ACROSTIC)

Fosters
Rejoices
Inspires
Empathises
Nurtures
Dependable-that's you my friend.

Around when needed
Never feel discarded
In each other's growth we revel
This friendship is continual.

Saying Goodbye-No, No!
The parting is only a change of scenario.

Shall keep in touch
without expecting too much

FOOTBALL (ACROSTIC)

Forward, Faster, Further...
Over here, pass it on,
Over there, dodge,
That’s a lovely kick!
Ball’s in the goal.
All players run across
Look out- kick from midfield
Lo! It’s another goal. Time up, We've won.
